Severe Maternal Morbidity 2022

Severe maternal morbidity includes unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery that result in significant short- or long-term consequences to a woman’s health. This brief includes Pennsylvania female residents and non-residents ages 12-55 years who were admitted for a delivery stay to a Pennsylvania acute care hospital in calendar years 2016 through 2022, with an emphasis on data from the two-year period 2021-2022. This brief shows a 40% increase in the rate of severe maternal morbidity over the study period and examines the sociodemographic differences among patients with severe maternal morbidities.
