PHC4 published a new set of County-Level Utilization Reports today, which display the overall total number of inpatient hospitalizations and ambulatory/outpatient cases for Pennsylvania residents.
The Common Procedures Report displays hospital-specific outcomes, ratings for complications and extended postoperative length of stay (i.e., how long a patient stays in the hospital after surgery), and average hospital charges as well as inpatient and outpatient volume, for three orthopedic procedure groups: spinal fusion, total hip replacement, and total knee replacement. This report includes inpatient acute care hospital discharges, as well as hospital outpatient department and ambulatory surgery center encounters, from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023.
PHC4 releases Financial Analysis, Volume Two today, the second in a three-part series of reports released annually by the organization. Volume Two focuses on providing insight into the financial health of Pennsylvania’s ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs).
PHC4 has released a new resource on its website, intended to support informing interested Pennsylvanians on current topics that impact health care in the Commonwealth. This first occurrence aims to offer insight into non-compete agreements in health care and includes an extensive summary of the events on both state and federal levels.

County-Level Utilization Reports are updated every quarter and show the overall total number of inpatient hospitalizations and ambulatory/outpatient cases for Pennsylvania residents. These results are displayed by patient age, sex, and payer. The County-Level Utilization Reports reflect data from Q4 of 2023.
This research brief examines inpatient hospitalizations for Pennsylvania children, (those under 18 years of age) who were admitted to a Pennsylvania general acute care hospital with a diagnosis of cancer. The analysis includes cases where cancer was the principal reason for the admission, as well as cases where the patient was admitted for another reason but also had a diagnosis of cancer.
Barry D. Buckingham, PHC4’s Executive Director, said “We know adding the surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure to this report provides further value to stakeholders when assessing opportunities to prioritize resources.” He added that PHC4 sees this as serving its mission to provide fact-based reporting to better inform decisions for all Pennsylvanians.
