Calculating Risk Scores
You may see health care facilities get a “risk score” in our reports. This score determines a patient’s risk when getting a procedure at that facility.
Let’s use hospital mortalities as an example. To figure out a patient’s mortality risk, we use statewide data to create a model that calculates the risk of dying in a hospital. We account for patient information like age, gender, and comorbidities to make sure we’re getting an accurate model.
Once we have this model, we calculate the rate at which would expect to see mortalities occur in health care facilities. We then compare this rate to what a facility has reported. So, if we expect to see five patient mortalities per year, and a hospital reports 10, that difference would be their risk score.
